Australian Mercy is seeking to raise funds for the Kanaan Centre in Jember, Indonesia. The centre provides care, training and support for 33 homeless children and 8 homeless old people on premises that are close to Jember.

This project has been running in the same premises for 21 years, its leaders have been known to us for many years.

Circumstances have arisen whereby a third party is trying to seize the premises that house the children. An amount of $30,000 needs to be paid to complete the purchase of the property and stave off the action that would see the premises lost and the  residents left with no where to go.

Ministry Director Olly  Atmadja has asked for urgent help in this matter, which if not resolved within a few weeks could see the children evicted into the streets.

Australian Mercy National Director, David Skeat has appealled for assistance for this project. I know this to be a credible and integritious work, he told a group of supporters – to see these kids evicted would be a horrible outcome.

Update – I recently ran into Olly Atmadja as I passed through Singapore – she reports that the dispute over the land is now settled and the land that was in dispute is now firmly in the hands of the team at Jember. Funds raised for this project by Australian Mercy were sent to Olly and have helped to cover legal and other expenses which were incurred in settling the dispute – the children and displaced people who live at Jember  now have a secure place that they can call home for many years to come.
