Great things are happening in Timor Leste

Kids at the Kid’s Ark School

The Australian Mercy Board had the great privilege of doing a monitoring visit on two of our projects in Timor Leste; these are located in Hera and Bahareduk.

The Kid’s Ark Hera project continues to grow and develop with its school, clinic, disabilities centre and potential hospital project. The staff are all very positive and there is a great buzz around the project site. It was our pleasure to talk to the staff and hear their perspective on what is happening there. Project leaders Soraya and Branca deserve high praise for the way that the project is progressing and for their inspirational leadership.

Bahareduk is a community development project that is seeing significant engagement in the local community. 60 out the 70 houses in the village have been built a part-time clinic established and an agricultural project has been established. The team there are also doing an amazing job.

Recently Timor Leste celebrated that 20-year anniversary of the vote that eventually led to their freedom. After the vote, Indonesian militia groups moved through the country killing thousands and burning villages and cities alike. The devastation is still evident and Timor Leste remains one of the poorest countries and has one of the youngest populations in the world today.
