One of the biggest challenges in Vanuatu is access to education and it’s affordability for low-income families. Due to the geographical spread of the population, limited resources and funding, poor road conditions and walking being the main mode of transport, access to schooling is a significant challenge which we set out to meet.
Teouma Christian Academy has been established in response to a request from the local community to operate a local school. We will fill the gap in the Teouma Valley region for educational needs.
TCA addresses the needs for local schooling capacity and quality education by providing a high quality education to the children of Teouma Valley in a fully equipped school. In doing so, the students entering university and the Vanuatu workforce will have a high level of confidence, learning capability and language skills.
This will ultimately provide Vanuatu with additional resources of skilled and experienced individuals for every aspect of society to aid in Vanuatu’s development.
Sustainable Development Plan
Teouma Christian Academy is contributing to the sustainable development of Vanuatu by meeting immediate goals for community and national education. By doing this, we expect to see the community transformed, promoting education, justice, equality and sustainable development. These efforts align with both the Vanuatu Sustainable Development Plan – 2030; and more broadly the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.
Why Education Matters
The main employment in our area is subsistence farming, and with school not compulsory many children are not being education beyond Class 6. However quality education is a long-term goals for Vanuatu’s 2030 Sustainability Development plan, and the Ministry of Education and Training states that “education is the fundamental precondition for political and economic development, democracy and social justice”. We understand that education is important for the development and growth of the nation and is how we will contribute to the community.
